Recent polling show that people support rent control by a margin of nine to one. Do you support a rent control that limits rent rises between tenancies as well as during tenancies?

organisation: Generation Rent

High rents are a problem in this country but the Liberal Democrats - together with a recent cross-party Parliamentary Select Committee report chaired by a Labour MP - do not believe that rent caps will provide a solution. Rent caps are only likely to reduce supply and therefore drive prices even higher. Increasing the supply of homes - through a number of measures - will be more effective at bringing down pricers and providing more choice for renters.

How would you reform surveillance law, oversight and practice to respect the rights of law-abiding people?

organisation: Open Rights Group (ORG)

The Liberal Democrats have always been fierce supporters of civil liberties, and stopped the Conservatives from introducing the so-called "Snooper's Charter" in the last Parliament and scrapped Labour's disastrous ID card scheme. After 2015 the Liberal Democrats would introduce a Digital Bill of Rights to give more people power over their data to protect us against blanket surveillance without affecting our ability to tackle emerging threats or target criminals.

The standards of goods and services that are essential, such as food and water, are generally highly regulated. Do you support enforced minimum standards in housing as a precondition of a renting?

organisation: Generation Rent

The Liberal Democrats would require landlords to refund rent to tenants where a property is found to contain a serious health risk, and allow tenants to withhold rent from landlords who have not carried out court-ordered improvements within a reasonable period of time.
